Media Prize for BR Broadcast with DZD Scientists

This year’s media prize of the foundation RUFZEICHEN GESUNDHEIT! [Call Sign Health] in the category Radio/TV was awarded to the TV program “Diabetes – Our Self-Made Disease” (produced by BR television in the series “Fascination Knowledge”). In a comprehensive documentation, the program shows what it means for the individual to develop diabetes and which approaches scientists are currently working on to get the disease under control.

During the BR broadcast, Prof. Dr. Matthias Tschöp, head of the research area “New Therapeutic Concepts” of the DZD and director of the Institute for Diabetes and Obesity at Helmholtz Zentrum München explained the innovative research approach of multi-hormone molecules. They combine the effects of various metabolic hormones and can drastically reduce blood glucose levels, appetite, body and liver fat– desirable effects in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity.
DZD researcher PD Dr. Peter Achenbach of the Institute for Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Zentrum München reported about new research results regarding type 1 diabetes. In the TV documentary, he presented possibilities for early detection and a "vaccination" against type 1 diabetes, which is currently being investigated in studies.
DZD scientist Prof. Dr. Andreas Birkenfeld of the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus of the Dresden University of Technology held the award lecture, which took place at the awards ceremony with distinguished guests from the political arena, science, business and the media in Baierbrunn near Munich. His topic was: “Healthy Aging and Long life – How Can We Control This in the Future?” He explained the significance of the Indy gene for body weight and life span.
