2nd Annual Helmholtz-Nature Medicine Diabetes Conference

We are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Helmholtz-Nature Medicine Diabetes Conference. This meeting will be held on September 21-23, 2014, at the Rilano No. 6 Lenbach Palais in Munich, Germany.

Helmholtz Zentrum München, a partner in the DZD, and Nature Medicine initiated a successful conference last year and continue the tradition with their second, high impact meeting on diabetes research this fall - featuring the Helmholtz Diabetes Lecture, in recognition of the lifetime achievements of a senior leader in the field, given by Jeffrey Friedman (Rockefeller University).

The conference is organized by Matthias Tschöp, Research Director of Helmholtz Diabetes Center (HDC), Helmholtz Zentrum München, Anette-Gabriele Ziegler, Director of the Institute of Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Zentrum München and Randy Levinson, Senior Editor of Nature Medicine.

With a unique scientific panel, the meeting brings together top scientists as well as promising young researchers from different diabetes disciplines. In a smaller, more personal setting, the invited speakers share their unpublished research and network with attendees. The goal is that the scientific discussions will foster collaborations that will abate the diabetes pandemic.

Addressing the preeminent scientific challenges in current diabetes research, the interdisciplinary program combines multidimensional and translational research approaches. In addition to a focus on type 2 diabetes and obesity, this year’s scientific program includes a session on type 1 diabetes.

The Helmholtz Young Investigator in Diabetes (HeIDi) Award, in recognition of a rising star, will be presented to a nominated young researcher who is selected by an esteemed panel.

Type 2 diabetes is a pandemic, affecting more than 345 million people across the globe (World Health Organization). Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU) is a partner of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD), a national association for excellent diabetes research. In cooperation with the Universities of Munich the HMGU makes a major contribution to the objective of diabetes research: to develop new approaches for diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The Helmholtz-Nature Medicine Diabetes Conference aims to foster international scientific exchange to accelerate progress toward curing diabetes
