Fit with Diabetes: Training with Sprinter Daniel Schnelting

As part of the project “Diabetes at School” of the DZD partner German Diabetes Center in Düsseldorf, Daniel Schnelting, multiple-time German champion in sprint, is training with children of a Düsseldorf elementary school.

Sprint star Daniel Schnelting wants to show students of the GGS Bingener Weg Elementary School that people with diabetes can be top achievers in sports. He wants to lead a training session with the students, among them children with diabetes. “The motivation for physical activity must begin already in childhood – regardless of whether a child has diabetes or a diabetes risk,” said Prof. Dr. Michael Roden, scientific director of the German Diabetes Center (DDZ) and board member of the DZD.

Daniel has had type 1 diabetes since childhood and is patron of the project “Diabetes at School”. With this project, which is headed by Prof. Karsten Müssig, the DDZ and the German Diabetes Aid – People with Diabetes – NRW State Association, supported by the IKK classic health insurance company, would like to alleviate the uncertainties of teachers and trainers in dealing with children with diabetes. Initial continuing education events on this topic have already taken place in Düsseldorf and Münster.
