FutureNight "Rethinking Health": Citizens’ Dialogue with Federal Minister Wanka

At the FutureNight event of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on September 8, 2015, around 200 guests discussed the question "Rethinking Health – Well-Being through High-Tech Medicine and Self-Optimization?".

Although the topic of health is primarily assigned to the Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Minister Johanna Wanka stressed that health research is also anchored in the BMBF. Here she emphasized the importance of the German Centres of Health Research (DZG), which include the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD). The DZG seek to meet the challenges of major widespread diseases and to develop individualized approaches to new therapies.

During the FutureNight discussion round, 19 recommendations for future action were discussed which the citizens had already drawn up for the BMBF as part of the FutureDay event on August 22, 2015 in Berlin. Important recommendations were health education of the population and independent information about the opportunities and risks of new health technologies. Another major concern of the participants was the provision of secure patient access to health data and quality standards in health care. In the field of research, a strengthening of health care research was proposed – a topic to which the DZD is also devoted.
