Prof. Andreas Birkenfeld is the New Head of the DZD partner institution in Tübingen

Since October 1, the Institute of Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) of the Helmholtz Zentrum München in Tübingen is headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Birkenfeld, who simultaneously acts as Medical Director of the Department of Internal Medicine IV – Endocrinology, Diabetology, and Nephrology at the University Hospital Tübingen. In both positions, he succeeds Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans-Ulrich Häring on his retirement.

Before, Andreas Birkenfeld as divisional head held the Professorship for Metabolic and Vascular Medicine at the Technical University Dresden and headed a working group at the Institute of Pancreatic Islet Research, Paul-Langerhans-Institute Dresden of the DZD partner Helmholtz Zentrum München. His research focuses on novel regulators of energy, glucose, and lipid homeostasis and their impact on insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, obesity and aging ultimately aiming at the development of more effective therapeutic strategies.

As an important partner in the German Center of Diabetes Research (DZD), the IDM will expand on its successful research foci in the areas prevention, therapy and mechanisms in close connection with the further development and research of the patient cohorts and novel therapies for type 2 diabetes in Tübingen.
